OVERVIEW
Adults in my practice are generally working on midlife transitions, career and relationship problems, childhood abuse, depression, substance abuse, and anxiety. My training as a Jungian analyst has given me a particularly strong ability to work in an open, generative way with adults who are facing questions of meaning in their lives that include the dimensions of conscious and unconscious experience, the relation of the individual to the collective, and the integration of dreams, creative, and spiritual processes. I also have many years of experience helping separated and divorced parents who want to develop or improve their co-parental relationship. In addition, I see a number of other psychotherapists for supervision and consultation.

Some adults come individually while others come as a couple for help with relationship problems. Some attend a relatively small number of sessions. Others work on things for a significant length of time. Some come once a week, while others attend several hours weekly. The duration of the therapy, frequency of sessions, and other matters are important issues to be decided together and in relation to the needs of the individual.

The children I see are impacted by problems with attachment, anxiety, loss, behavior control, communication, school performance, and other issues. Adolescents are often facing problems related to family conflict, behavior, school problems, problems with peers, depression, and worries about the future. I have a specialization in working with kids from families in which there is high conflict, trauma, death, separation of parents or divorce.

APPROACH TO PSYCHOTHERAPY

My approach to the practice of psychotherapy is an integration of personal and clinical experience and training. Theoretically, I am most influenced by psychodynamic and Jungian theories in psychology, as well as by the humanistic philosophy of Martin Buber.

Carl Jung, one of the pioneers in psychoanalysis, found through his personal explorations and clinical work with many people over decades that wholeness as a person comes through the integration of the conscious and unconscious parts of who we are. What is unconscious – the unknown - has a powerful influence on us, whether we want it to or not. It is up to the individual to face what it brings and to develop his or her own unique relationship to it. It is the experience of this tension between conscious and unconscious, known and unknown, that can provide the conditions for what Jung called “individuation,” the process of finding and living one’s own true, unique life.

Martin Buber, one of the greatest twentieth century philosophers, placed the highest value on genuine meeting between people. By this he did not mean that people must agree but that each individual can stand on a sort of narrow ridge of being true to him or herself on the one hand and at the same time remaining in relationship with the other. Buber believed that it was in such authentic interaction that the deepests spiritual nature of our existence is present.
